Mostly escapes from cultivation, Daylilies are a common sight along Missouri roadways, blooming in profusion in June and July with large, showy flowers. Interestingly, seeds are very rarely produced, so the large colonies seen are a result of root division.
About 4-5 flowers bloom on each tall stalk, high above the basal clump of strap-shaped leaves. Each flower lasts just one day.
Thousands of cultivated varieties have been developed in a multitude of colors, and are highly popular for gardens and landscaping. It is very easy to grow and to transplant, forming thick clumps that crowd out weeds.
