This distinctive vining plant has interesting flowers and an intriguing habit of quickly folding its compound leaves in half tightly when touched, triggered by sensitive hairs.
The brightly colored flower head is a tightly packed cluster which forms a ball of long pink stamens, tipped with yellow pollen. I often encounter this intriguing plant growing along the gravel roads around my home.
Covered with prickles, it has given scratches to many unprotected shins and ankles that have caught the trailing vines. Wild turkey eat the leaves of this plant, and Bobwhite Quail eat its seeds.
